SLCC Student Body President Participates in Higher Education Forum on C-SPAN

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) February 21, 2013

SLCC Student Body President Aaron Starks recently appeared on C-SPAN television as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Higher Education Forum.

The Forum brought together business leadersincluding Margaret Spellings, Secretary of Education under George W. Bush from 2005-2009 and student representatives to discuss ways the business community and higher education institutions can better engage with one another to provide employment opportunities for students.

Neither business leaders nor students can do this alone, said Starks, who touted the successes Governor Herberts Prosperity 2020 initiative has already experienced in Utah.

Along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Campus Leadership Council, the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, and Young Invincibles joined to offer the seminar. Collegiate student body presidents from institutions in Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Utah, Missouri and Maryland attended. Business and industry representatives included Microsoft, the Florida Board of Education and 2U, among others.

Expressing appreciation for business leaders willingness to reach out to students, Starks said he found the experience informative. I can see more clearly a space for the private sector in higher education, he said. This event helped students speak with validity and empowered them to become key players in the academic arena. I hope that all of us on the panel will bring the kinds of discussion we had home and spark change in our respective states at a grass-roots level.
