Author Rosemary Wisewould depicts the struggles faced by these soldiers, and their wives, in taming the wilderness in her novel, Virgin Impressions. </p>
<p>The story focuses on Stacy, a young and genteel English woman with a past of perceived abandonment. She goes back to a life of simplicity, hardship, isolation and limited facilities to work beside her young husband in clearing and carving out a home and farm from a virgin block of bush. In this remote environment, with the loving support of her husband, companionship of people from a bygone era, and her close friend, she endures climatic extremes and frightening wildlife. As Stacy struggles to build a new home, she also strives to renew herself in a distant place of second chances and new beginnings. </p>
<p>Virgin Impressions is a tribute to the brave women who left behind comfortable homes to support their returned soldiers. Isolated but happy, they worked together with their husbands on soldier settlement farms in their quest to build something to call their own. </p>

<br />Rosemary Wisewould (Gamble) was born and raised in Collie, a small coal mining town in the south west of Western Australia. After marrying and relocating to Fitzgerald, a grain and sheep farming community on the coast, she became very active in the developing of the family farm. Wisewould studied and enjoyed English Literature in high school and for many years she dabbled in writing short stories and poetry but began writing seriously at a later age. Fitzgerald is close to the town of Jerramungup, a community which has a history connected with Australias returned servicemen and is, with the history of the clearing of the area, one of the inspirations for Virgin Impressions. </p>
